An Interview with Mahafsoun

As this is my first post of 2016, I wanted to share something special I have been working on; an interview with Mahafsoun. Mahafsoun is a alternative fashion model and one of my many inspirations as a blogger. Her style, photographs and individuality instantly caught my eye and this week, I interviewed and got to know the dark haired beauty.
So I'd like to extend a big welcome to Mahafsoun. I hope you're well?

Thank you very much! I'm doing very well. I have been extremely busy with collaborations and work, as usual, but happy to be sitting down for this interview.

I'd love to know more about your career in the fashion industry and what inspired you to begin modelling?

In the beginning I started through dancing and dance videos which caught the attention of the first photographer I worked with. I did my first photoshoot with a local photographer in August of 2011 and truly enjoyed the process of being in front of the camera. Before this, the only experience I had as a model was self-portraits (which I still do today).

From there on, the photoshoots became more elaborate and called for better fashion and styling choices. This is when I started to collaborate with different international designers and brands. Dancing is still my main focus, but modelling, or the whole process of it, which consists of photography (when doing self-portraits), styling, makeup and editing is also a way for me to express myself and be creative.

How do you feel when you see yourself as the face of big clothing brands such as Disturbia and Killstar?

I'm truly honoured to be modelling for such fantastic brands such as Killstar, Shrine of Hollywood, Disturbia, Spin Doctor and much more. It is a dream come true and although I am only one of the many models collaborating with these companies, it still is a huge honour to know that these brands which I grew up wearing are now ones that I model for.

You have an amazing fashion sense but how would you describe your individual style?

Thank you so much. I would simply describe it as 'alternative'. I don't know what category it would fall under as I love to mix in a bit of everything in my daily wardrobe. Being comfortable though, is the most important thing to me.

As well as having a career in modelling, you're also widely known for belly dancing to metal music, but which do you prefer?

Bellydance, without a doubt. Dancing is where I started everything. My creativity, my expression. Everything else somewhat started after I began bellydancing. For me it is wonderful and a creative outlet to model, edit the photos, play the piano, and sometimes sing... but to be honest, nothing comes close to the love I have for the art of bellydance. When I dance, everything else disappears and only that moment exists. I know that the love I have for it comes from my soul.

I've always believed that music and fashion go hand in hand, do you agree?

Absolutely. Every genre of music is associated with a style of fashion. Not to say that it is a rule, but often there is a distinct connection between a genre of music and the style of clothing which the listeners of that genre choose to wear. I have noticed a great difference in the style of clothing worn by fans of heavy/death metal opposed to fans of mostly symphonic/gothic metal. You also wouldn't see a Shakira fan wearing a Septicflesh t-shirt haha. So yes, I believe there is a strong connection between music and fashion.
You inspire many people, including me as a blogger, if you could give your followers any advice, what would it be?

Thank you very much. That is truly one of the best things any artist can hear. My advice I would give, without being too specific, is to stay true to what you want out of life, art, your career, or whatever you're following. It is not about saying 'yes' to anything that comes to you. It is about choosing the right doors to open. To say it more clearly: Learn to say no to projects/doors that you have the slightest negative feeling about. A lot of tempting doors will open in front of you, so remember what you're passionate about and try to see a few steps ahead.
What doors has your art opened for you?
So many, that when I merely try to think about counting them, it leaves me speechless. Most precious of all is the relationships I have been able to create with people who are now a part of my path and creative circle, the friends I have gained and most unbelievable of all, being able to collaborate with artists that I grew up with and whose posters I had on my wall, only to work with them or dance on stage with them years later.

Moonspell and Victoria Francés are a great example of artists who I grew up with and I had the honour of sharing the stage with Moonspell three times which was a dream I never dared to imagine. Victoria Francés is an artist whose posters and paintings I had on my walls since I was in high school and those beautiful paintings that Victoria Francés brought to life... I became one of the girls in her paintings. Even thinking of it now brings a smile to my face.

Are you working on any exciting projects at the moment? And what are your plans for 2016?

I'm always keeping busy with projects but I do have some bigger, more exciting announcements for 2016. Some performance-related announcements and perhaps a few publications and new collaborations. I'm truly looking forward to 2016. To refocus my energy and mind on what I love, to carry with me the beautiful things that happened in 2015 and to continue doing all of this with more force and dedication.

I'd just like to thank you for taking the time to do this interview, I've enjoyed getting to know you and I'm looking forward to your future plans.
Thank you so much for this interview and your fantastic questions. I had a wonderful time enjoying my tea and answering these. It was also wonderful to think back on the beautiful memories and to remember what I am thankful for.
